Second hand

A term meaning that Black copies White's opening setup, but at the cost of a tempo.

The term "first hand" carries the same idea in reverse — White plays an opening usually played by Black, but gains a tempo by doing so.

Today both terms have almost lost their meaning, since such opening setups have acquired names of their own. For example, "the King's Indian in the first hand" is now known as the King's Indian Attack.
