Minority attack

A standard strategic plan aimed at provoking a weakness in the opponent's position, usually on the queenside flank.

In practice, the minority attack is usually carried out by advancing White's "a" and "b" pawns against Black's pawn chain a7 (a6)-b7-c6-d5. If successful, this advance creates a weak pawn for Black and opens the way for White's pieces to break into the opponent's camp.
